Responsiveness and agility are no longer mere advantages for fashion and retail brands, they’re essential components of the modern supply chain.
Earlier this month, Microsoft and Blue Yonder teamed up to shine a spotlight on the role AI and advanced digital technologies play in enabling supply chain transformation in today’s world.
As a fellow Microsoft partner, we thought we’d take a moment to share our perspective on the topic, particularly as we embed our tech in Microsoft’s cloud ERP solutions to enable more agile, responsive and resilient supply chains ourselves.
Traditional supply chains are a thing of the past
The fashion and retail sectors face unprecedented challenges, from the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic to geopolitical tensions and rising operational costs.
Traditional linear supply chain models and outdated procurement strategies fall short in addressing these issues.
Brands must rethink their entire supply chain strategy to embed resilience, agility, and sustainability.
Failure to adapt can leave businesses struggling with demand volatility, supply disruptions, and increasing pressures for transparency and ethical sourcing.
Transforming Microsoft D365 into a powerhouse tool for fashion and retail
At K3, we recognise the pivotal role of advanced digital technologies, particularly cloud-based ERP systems and AI solutions.
By embedding our solutions seamlessly into Microsoft’s ERPs, we offer comprehensive solutions that empower brands to sense and adapt to market shifts in real-time, optimise operations, and maintain a competitive edge amidst constant change.
K3’s enhancements to D365 transform the base ERP into an inventory, merchandising, and assortment planning powerhouse. For instance, we’ve added features like line planning, store planning and store clustering to simplify and enhance planning processes.
Likewise, our merchandising additions incorporate an array of functions, from managing prices to handling supply and demand with replenishment tools.
From a fulfilment perspective, we’ve developed prioritised allocation functionality that can be scheduled, using different prioritisation schedules based on the season in question, with additional parameters around whether it is an initial launch or replenishment order, to streamline the process for companies.
Last – but certainly not least – we enhanced D365 Finance & Operations to enable brands to operate their wholesale channels through the ERP. This is important because out of the box, vanilla D365 F&O does not have any specific wholesale capabilities.
Our developments enable wholesale, retail, and online teams to plan their own inventory. The real magic here, however, is that when goods arrive, they can be systemically separated until separation is no longer required, providing the individual teams with increased visibility and planning prowess.
Key wholesale customers can even be “ringfenced” from regular wholesale customers, allowing block and call-orders to ensure inventory is available for important clients. In a world where disruption has become the norm, having the ability to allow or block orders to key customers in your ERP environment is critical to protecting the bottom-line.
Utilising Copilot to enable AI-driven automation and optimisation
Since we natively embed our solutions in D365, fashion companies can also tap into Microsoft Copilot, which is integrated with D365, to automate routine tasks, extract insights from data, and provide intelligent recommendations.
Some key use cases include:
- Inventory optimisation: Automate vendor replenishment processes based on accurate sales and inventory forecasts in D365 Business Central.
- Personalised shopping: Enhance customer experiences with real-time personalised product recommendations and offers in Cloud for Retail.
- Supply chain visibility: Rapidly update purchase orders and adjust lead times based on disruption impacts in D365 Supply Chain Management.
- Sourcing optimisation: Predict future costs and develop appropriate purchasing strategies based on market data in D365 F&O.
Separately, we recently unveiled our AI-powered product description generator – a powerful tool to automate a mundane task and empower employees to redirect their energy toward more impactful endeavours.
In the future, we’ll also be launching a label translation feature that utilises AI and Machine Learning to enable users to translate their D365 environment into select languages.
Together, Microsoft and K3’s AI tools offer fashion and retail companies countless efficiencies that optimise the supply chain and streamline operations to drive tangible change.
Embedding ethical and responsible practices into the supply chain
While the legislative push around sustainability and ethical responsibilities is slowing somewhat, there’s no denying that in fashion especially, companies must start adopting better practices.
K3’s enhancements to D365 include a dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) module that provides classifications and certifications for suppliers and raw materials.
This tool enables companies to select suppliers that meet their sustainability criteria and block transactions with non-compliant vendors, ensuring sustainable sourcing practices with minimal effort.
Building resilient supply chains with K3 and Microsoft
To sum up in a few key points, fashion and retail companies must modernise their systems to transition away from outdated practices and supply chain models.
By choosing the potent combination of K3 and Microsoft, businesses can benefit from:
- Increased agility: Quickly adapt to market shifts and demand changes.
- Improved visibility: Gain in-depth insights across the supply chain.
- Enhanced efficiency: Streamline operations and reduce costs.
- Sustainability and compliance: Meet regulatory requirements and promote ethical practices.
